Church as Home

Church as Home: "

Happy Easter Sunday – Being an (non-religious) architecture fanatic, I bring you these wonderful examples of renovated Churches turned into homes.

Everett, Washington Church turned Home

Everett, Washington Church turned Home

This example, formerly the Christian Reformed Church of Everett is owned by a couple who had the home “reblessed” after renovations. The first floor is made up of 2,600 square feet of undivided space, as the second-floor bedroom and living room peek out like a choir loft. The couple was looking for houses, but then visited the property on a whim and just knew…

English Church turned Home

English Church turned Home

This converted five-bedroom Georgian church in England (purchase price: £92,000; money spent on renovations £300,000). Adding skylights to the high ceilings help bring much needed light into the space. The original stained-glass windows become a dramatic setting for the bedroom.

Netherlands Church turned Home

Netherlands Church turned Home

In the Netherlands, Architects Ruud Wisser in Netherlands have transformed this waterfront church in Rotterdam. Decidedly modern, this is a church home that I can get down with. Clean lines, stark white surfaces, dramatic arches. Wow. Really stunning!

So, you’re hooked on buying a church and turning it into your home, now what? How about this family who used Ebay to save tons of cash on renovations. Or perhaps you found an apartment that used to be a church like this one: “A dutch firm named Zecc has converted an old chapel into an apartment, carefully respecting and enhancing the character of the original building. The chapel was part of a large housing complex of the Friars of Utrecht, which at its height, around the mid-20th century, housed 217 residents. The remaining 13 elderly friars, however, moved to a nursing home in 2005, and the complex was divided up and converted into about 40 apartments.” (Freshome)
