Dresses that are as famous as the one Kate Middleton wore today to marry Prince William only come along every few decades. And the dress's designer, Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, is finally speaking after months of flat-out denying that she and her team were involved in the wedding at all. 'It has been the experience of a lifetime to work with Catherine Middleton to create her wedding dress,' Burton said in a statement, adding:
'Alexander McQueen's designs are all about bringing contrasts together to create startling and beautiful clothes and I hope that by marrying traditional fabrics and lacework, with a modern structure and design we have created a beautiful dress for Catherine on her wedding day. The last few months have been very exciting and an incredible experience for my team and I as we have worked closely with Catherine to create this dress under conditions of the strictest secrecy.'
Of the secrecy surrounding the project, Burton added, 'Understandably, Catherine has been very keen to keep the details of her dress a secret, which is every bride's prerogative, and we gave an undertaking to keep our role confidential until the day of the wedding.' And:
'Catherine looked absolutely stunning today, and the team at Alexander McQueen are very proud of what we have created. The dress was just one component of a spectacular day, and I do not think it is appropriate to comment any further beyond saying that I personally am very grateful and honoured to have been given the opportunity to work on this project, and I wish TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge every good wish for the future.'
Aw! Insiders suspect that Kate and Sarah worked very closely on the dress design since it was much more traditional-looking than typical McQueen runway fare. But this was probably the point, since ultimately it looked like something Kate — who does not typically run around in McQueen clothing — would wear. In keeping with her image, it didn't turn her into a scarily fashioned-out person. The burgeoning debate over whether or not the dress was dramatic enough for the occasion will surely continue in the coming days. While it might have been fun to see a little more drama in the gown, we think it was perfect for a few reasons: It didn't overshadow the wedding itself (though it did overshadow William, but that was inevitable); it was right for the modest mood the couple wanted to create in such difficult economic times, without skimping on elegance; and Kate looked comfortable, terrifically happy, and, most importantly, like herself.
