She Changes

She Changes: "

The sculpture has become the official symbol of the city, Porto, Portugal. ” She Changes” is a hollow form suspended about a three lane highway and moves in the wind. Local people give different interpretations of the work: from the fishing nets, ships and masts of the country’s maritime history to Portuguese lace, sea creatures and ripples in water.

Using color and material effects, the architect Janet Echelman invoke memories of the site’s historic past as a fishing and industrial centre. Using soft and flexible material for a sculpture at this scale makes it original. The knotting of the fiber is inspired from the traditional lacemaking to achieve different net sizes to create variations in opacity.

At night the public sculpture is illuminated.
