Valentijn de Hingh: Transgender Model to Watch

Valentijn de Hingh: Transgender Model to Watch: "

Valentijn de Hingh is a transgender model who was followed by a documentary film crew from the age of 8 to 17. At first, when filming began, the footage was supposed to be used in a television documentary about children questioning their gender identity. But then filmmaker Hetty Niesch got the idea to follow de Hingh and stuck with her for nine years, until she was 17 years old; that documentary finally aired on Dutch television in 2007.

At the age of 17 and the height of five foot nine, de Hingh started modeling with an agency in Amsterdam, walking runway shows for designers like Martin Margiela and Comme des Garçons. When she grew to six foot one, agents said she was too tall, and she stopped modeling. However, with the rising popularity of transgender model Lea T. and androgynous model Andrej Pejic, de Hingh took another stab at it when she was working at a modeling agency in Amsterdam as an assistant booker. She ended up shooting with Patrick Demarchelier for Love magazine, and is 'currently shooting a lot for various magazines,' Vogue.it reports.

So, do we add Valentijn de Hingh to the list of transgender models who are so hot right now? Along with, well, Asian models? And plus-size models? Hopefully the rise of women like de Hingh is a step toward the day when models aren't famous for being some other sort of thing, and instead are famous for being, simply, beautiful.
