Why Oh Why Can't We Have a Better Press Corps? New York Times Edition: "
"
Ex-journalism deans tell me that Dean Baquet is a good choice to become one of the heads of the New York Times. I am not sure--the thing that sticks in my brain about Dean Baquet is that he was one of the big advocates for publishing the Vicki Iseman-John McCain nudge-nudge-wink-wink-say-no-more article back in early 2008...
IIRC, Baquet's justification for publishing the story went, roughly: It shows that John McCain had poor judgment--McCain had, after all, flirted with a lobbyist even though he knew well that there were unscrupulous journalists out there ready to pounce on any hint of sexual scandal!
Is that news judgment we should believe in?
