NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- Buying a new car can be daunting enough before you even begin to consider all of the extras, add-ons and options you can buy to customize it. Fortunately, the selection process has become more streamlined in recent years.
'Automotive manufacturers are moving away from limitless options,' says Alec Gutierrez, manager of vehicle valuation for Kelley Blue Book. From a production standpoint, making cars with every possible combination of options, from pairing alloy wheels with a spoiler to heated seats with a full navigation system, 'becomes mind-boggling,' he says. So to control costs and curb confusion, many manufacturers create standardized packages with options at tiered levels.
