This fun Open University video explains philosopher John Searle's classic thought experiment that challenges the possibility of strong AI, roughly defined as computers that have mental capabilities similar to humans. It's a fascinating argument, but I for one would be just as happy with a machine that tricks me into thinking it understands me, even if it's secretly as dumb as a toaster. (via New Scientist)
