Legendary Cosmopolitan editor Helen Gurley Brown is donating $30 million to building the bicoastal David and Helen Gurley Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia and Stanford universities in honor of her late husband, an alumnus of both schools. A dean from Columbia's J-school said, "We're not here to do iPhone apps. ... We're here to try to make fundamental underlying technological advances that will have a lasting effect on media and journalism." The schools will each receive $12 million for a collaborative "innovation laboratory," with Columbia getting an extra $6 million for a new wing and newsroom renovation. The generous Sex and the Single Girl author turns 90 next month, and never went to college. "She'd like to provide that opportunity to other young people since she never had it," said a rep for Hearst Corp., which doubtlessly appreciates the boost to its talent pool.
