Marie-Antoinette’s Silk Mules Sold for More Than $57,000:
Organizers of the French Revolution–era artifacts auction expected the footwear (not stuffed or reupholstered animals) to go for $7,000, tops. The white shoes with pleated ribbons were designed in 1790 and are believed to have been worn by the queen of France at national day celebrations on July 14 of that year.
