Philippines leads in reef degradation, study shows

CAIRNS, Australia—Nearly all the reefs in the Coral Triangle, the waters that surround six countries in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific, are in decline, and the Philippines is leading in reef degradation, which could mean a bleak future for its economy and food situation, scientists and environment officials said.

According to a study by the World Resources Institute (WRI) called Reefs at Risk, about 85 percent of the reefs in the Coral Triangle, a biodiversity hotspot, are in peril.
